TORARICA GOING GREEN

In October 2019, the Torarica Group achieved the Green Key certification for the first time. At that time, the Torarica Group became the first hotel chain and the first company in Suriname to be certified with this label. Green Key is an eco-label for tourism and recreational facilities, awarded to businesses that meet a number of environmental requirements. Earning a Green Key award demonstrates that companies are committed to environmentally friendly and sustainable business practices.

The Green Key award is valid for one year, with the possibility of renewal annually if the audit results are satisfactory. The Torarica Group meets a total of 13 criteria. We aim to pursue knowledge and practices that lead to environmentally friendly and ecological decision-making, which helps protect the environment and natural resources for both current and future generations.

Waste Management: 

• We aim to recycle over 85% of our plastic waste. 
• Over 100% of our glass waste is recycled monthly. 
• We collect our kitchen oil, which is further recycled into biodiesel, and part of it is used to make soap for our hotel rooms. 
• We also collect our cardboard waste for recycling. 
• To operate as paperless as possible, we have digitized several of our processes. Our menus and surveys are now offered through QR code scanning. 

Water & Energy Usage: 

• Annually, we aim to reduce our water consumption by 2%. To achieve this, showers, faucets, and toilets are purchased with specific standards that do not compromise our guests' comfort. 
• We strive to operate more energy efficiently and ensure that equipment is adjusted accordingly. 

Bio-degradable Materials: 

• For our restaurants, we exclusively use biodegradable packaging materials. 
• We have a No Straw Policy, but guests can request a compostable straw made from avocado pits. 

Sustainable purchasing and Local Content: 

• We support local content and prefer partnerships with local suppliers who deliver organically grown products.
